04 Untitled, Afro Hair & Beauty Show 2003, Limited Edition 1 of 10 +2AP
£2125.00 GBP
This series is a documentation of people who attended the Afro Hair and Beauty Show at Alexandra Palace over the May Bank Holiday weekend. This work is a celebration of afro hair and beauty. The subject matter chosen was primarily to document Black Women in a positive light since this was not widely portrayed in media and advertising at the time.
The work was originally inspired by Kobena Mercer's chapter Black Hair/Style Politics from the book 'Welcome to The Jungle'. Dawoud Bey's Class Pictures have also inspired this work. My family history, afro hair and beauty shops, and politics around afro hair and beauty also influenced the work.
This edition was part of an ongoing series which took place from 1998 to 2003.
