Africa Centre Summer Festival

Perrier provided two images from her ‘Afro Hair and Beauty Show’ series shown at the following event: the highly-anticipated Africa Centre Summer Festival which took place from  3 - 4 August 2013.

This festival involves a high-energy weekend of music, fashion, dance, food, performances and film in and around Covent Garden Piazza.

This series was inspired by Kobena Mercer’s chapter Black Hair/Style Politics from the book ‘Welcome to The Jungle’. Dawoud Bey’s Class Pictures have also inspired this work. Perrier’s family history, afro hair and beauty shops, and politics around afro hair and beauty also influenced the work.

The series is a documentation of people who attended the Afro Hair and Beauty Show at Alexandra Palace over the May Bank Holiday weekend. This work is a celebration of afro hair and beauty.

The subject matter chosen was primarily to document Black Women in a positive light since this was not widely portrayed in media and advertising at the time. This edition was part of an ongoing series which took place from 1998 to 2003.
